About ten years ago you could not learn guitar with online guitar lessons. You could either just learn on your own as many famous guitar players have or you could take guitar lessons from a guitar teacher.
The cool thing about online guitar lessons is that you get videos usually. I would not bother getting an online guitar lessons course that did not have any video as so many courses have video anyway.
But you can watch and learn guitar anytime you want. You are not on someone elses schedule and you can learn and master the basics before moving on your own. I suggest starting with the chords, major scales, some chord theory like the CAGED system, and then even learn how to read tabs.
A lot of guitar players will just learn tabs and look them up for whatever song they want to play. But this is a habit you will want to break. Heck you don’t even need to read music to become a great guitar player as it has been done time and time again.
Learn to Play Guitar By Ear
Think back to when online guitar lessons and tabs did not even exist. All those players had were their guitars, ears, and emotions to connect with the instrument. If you ever seen a good guitar player listen to a song for the first time and match the chords and notes on their guitar within minutes then you will know that learning by ear is far more powerful.
It is pretty much mandatory to have a feel for music to become a great guitarist. Online guitar lessons can help. Just be careful who you learn from. I hate say it but from my own experience it is hard to find quality online guitar lessons that are free of charge.
You want to learn from a great guitar teacher who knows what he is doing. Anybody who wants to learn guitar has a favorite type of music. Guitarists have different tastes so don’t feel like you need to learn anything you don’t like.
Just stick to the type of music you like and learn the style with your guitar. A great exercise I learned from online guitar lessons for training your ears is to listen to chords but don’t look at what they are just close your eyes and listen.
Listening takes a lot of practice but again it is the number one skill to get down not just as a guitar player but as a musician. Even if you just want to learn guitar as a hobby you will limit yourself by just using guitar tabs.
